College/Kevin Lee/The Last Three Weeks

I.

Last Friday I took my dad to the airport to fly out to Vancouver, Canada. He stayed there for four days to practice with his band and make a video to send to the cruise director in Florida. I had to wake up quite early [5am] to drive him there.

On the way back up the 405 North, I see a sign saying

UCLA
Next Exit

I remembered thinking that I had always wanted to visit the University of California at Los Angeles, but I had never gotten around to it.

So I pulled off the freeway, got to UCLA, and spent about 5 hours touring around the campus. Let me tell you guys, it's beautiful campus. I love the city life, so UCLA is a school I'm considering transfering too.

Unfortunately as a transfer to a UC school, you need to have 60 Units [2 Semesters] worth of credits. That means two more years in the Antelope Valley... Not something I'm particularly excited about. Though UCLA is beautiful campus, they don't have my intended major which is Business Management. They do have Business Economics, but I don't know what that's all about.

My other college choice is California State Univeristy at Northridge. They do have Business Management. In fact, they're one of the best Business schools in the whole state. I would love to go to CSUN, but the Cal State system also requires 60 units of classes.

My third college choice is Azusa Pacific University. It's a private Christian college, so it's a little more expensive. But they have an awesome Business program. Plus, I love the campus, the atmosphere, and the community feel to the place. APU only requires 30 units of classes.

I think what I want to go with is to take a year of classes at Antelope Valley College then transfer to Azusa Pacific. If I love APU, I'll stay at APU. If I don't, I'll transfer to UCLA or CSUN.

I went to High School with a guy named Kevin Lee. I didn't know Kevin all that well, but we had a couple classes together. He was pretty cool. Anyway, the reason I write about him now is that I am amazed at his photography. It's absolutely amazing. He specializes in portrait work. Check out his deviantArt Profile. Here are some of his shots

Check him out.

The last three weeks I haven't blogged...

I went to Universal Studios to hang with Justin for his birthday.
I went to the Laugh Factory that same night in Hollywood where we saw Bob Saget, John Mayer, and Dane Cook.
I've gotten so many epics in World of Warcraft.
I met up with Lisa to talk over training day stuff for HOBY's annual WLC this summer.
I got a haircut. No more long hair.

It's been a busy past three weeks it seems with work. I plan on taking more pictures and updating more often too.

*sigh*... Much to work on.

Okay... so work was a little discouraging tonight, to be honest. First of all, it was an evening shift, which I'm not fond of in the first place. I'd rather work mornings.

Anyway, the mall closes at 9p. At that time, we wait for the customers to leave while not letting any other ones enter the store. Then we recover the store, folding t-shirts, fingerspacing, emptying trash, counting registers, etc. etc.

This is where the discouraging part comes in. I have never been very good at closing. Maria, our store manager, has even told me that it's something I need to work on. Tonight when Veronica, another manager, finished counting the registers in the office, she comes out looks around and notices the things I missed/overlooked doing the closing. She asks me the question, "So.. Cy. Do you think you're ready to be a manager? Like, how do you feel about it?"... The question threw me off. I felt like she felt that I wasn't ready. It kinda made me sad for the rest of the night. She didn't say it all condescending or anything. It was just the question itself that made me realize all the more that I do have a lot to work on before I can take on the responsibility of being a manager.

Anyway, looking on the bright side, it's more to learn and grow through.

----

Funny quotes of the night:

Two women enter the store towards the end of the night. They look to be in their late 40s. One is latino; the other caucasian. While they were finishing up with their shopping, they stopped at one of the tables with our girls' screen tees. The second lady holds up a shirt that says "Latina" on it.

First lady: "I really really like that shirt. Do they have any larger sizes?"
Second lady: "This is an extra large."
First lady: "Oh come on."
Second lady to me: "I've been trying to tell her, these kind of clothes are for skinny b*tches!"

I laugh.

First lady: "See that's not right. You can't be racist against big-boobed or fat women!"

I about lost it right there.

----

Another quote:

Lady with her kids are shopping around. Also in her late 40s. I'm ringing her up at the cash register.

Me: It's pretty hot in here.
Veronica: Yeah I turned up the heat. I was cold.
Lady: I know! I'm all sweating here.
Veronica: Oh! I'm sorry, I'll turn it down.
Lady: *laughs* I thought it was my menopause coming on!
Me: HA! HA!... Alrighty, have a great night.
Lady: You too.

----

A so-so night.

Racist, much?

So tonight at work was an interesting one. First of all, I worked a full 8 hour shift, which I haven't done in quite a long time. My feet are killing me right now. Second, Veronica, one of our managers had caught a kid stealing sunglasses, called his mom, and told him to never set foot in the store again. That was rad.

The third thing irked me and still irks me to this moment. I was laying out T-shirts on one of the front tables. One of em had a printing of a couple cartoon dogs standing behind a fence. One dog says, "Why must I feel like that", another says "Why must I chase the cat?", and the third says, "It's just the dogg in me!"... Obviously a Snoop Doggy Dogg shirt. Another is a shirt with 'Dr. Dre' printed over a large portrait of himself.

No, it wasn't the shirts that bothered me, but rather a comment one of my coworkers had made. This coworker walked up to me, looked at the Dr. Dre shirt and said, "Since when did we become a 'N*gg*r Store'? I swear, we're getting all this black stuff. They have Demo (another retail store) for that. Pretty soon we'll be selling Fubu."... I was kinda blown away by the comment and didn't really react to it. The coworker went on his way straightening up the area.

Later on in the night, two young black ladies came in the store acting quite hyper and giddy. This same coworker murmurred to me, "I f***in' hate black people."

What is it with people? I'd like to say, what is wrong with our generation, but this isn't a problem that is different between ages. This is something that all people of all generations deal with. Really, why the animosity? Are they really that annoying that you have to generalize an entire race with a stereotype and judge?

I don't understand why people can't be more accepting and kind towards one another. Especially for our generation, we need to set a better standard of acceptance and unity. Building hatred is not a good thing for this world.

*sigh*... My opinions of this certain coworker have definitely changed a bit. I wish that this person gets some sort of revelation in their life that changes their view. But that's wishful thinking.

I'm a Ninja!

Probably one of the coolest websites out there is AskANinja.com. I don't know what it is, but I find it ridiculously hillarious.

Basically it's a guy dressed as a ninja answering questions on video that people email him. Genious, I say.

Here's one video that I found pretty funny.

"That's a great question"

If you've been keeping up, you'd know that today I went over to Thousand Oaks to speak at our local HOBY seminar about this blog. The kids are still as energetic as ever. It's always fun. I also got to see some of my old friends from 2003 that were on junior staff with me in 2004. Jeff and Andy... Cool kids.

So anyway, I spoke a little bit about blogging in general. A brief history about where blogging came from... blah blah, etc, etc. I spun it in a way that showed that the youth can get their voices heard through the internet. We're a diverse and opinionated generation. We're tech savvy and the internet is a common tool used by people our age.

When it came time for a brief question and answer session afterwards, I was asked something along the lines of "Do you think blogging promotes the 'emo' lifestyle and is a means for people to draw attention to themselves?". I had to laugh a little because I think that that question was very true and a good generalization of many teenagers today. It does seem that many teens who blog always blog about something sad or depressing and how 'emo' they feel. My response to the ambassador was that while yes, it's a common thing, it's still a stereotype that unfortunately, others of us who are not like that, have to deal with. I don't find blogging as something where I want people to focus on me and check out the cool things I'm doing. If you read some of the past entries, it's normally about plain stuff that I do, what my day was like, etc. I don't blog for other people. My blogging is mainly a hobby for myself.

After the question and answer session, the ambassadors broke out into their groups. The other panelists and I went around answering any questions that the groups might have had. One question I was asked most often was "Why do you think so many people view Myspace.com as a bad thing?"

My response to this is that Myspace.com is a tool. As any other means of communication (IM, telephone, etc) it can be used correctly or abused. It's sad that the older generations get a bad image from Myspace and the people who use it because of what's displayed in the media. The news wont tell you stories about how people have reconnected with old friends or anything like that. The news will tell you about the 16 year old girl who was abducted by an older man posing as an 18 year old guy in high school on Myspace.com. They'll run the dirt, but not the good stuff. And the sad thing is that this isn't just true about Myspace. This is true about most things involving the youth.

One of the other panelists had mentioned a familiar quote about media and news: "If it bleeds it leads." and "Sex Sells". Sadly, because shocking and horrible things get better ratings, noble and praiseworthy things get overlooked.

The internet is a great thing. It is very useful and can be used for so much benefit. Unfortunately, the internet is prone to human fallacy. You can't blame the internet for sexual predators any more than you can blame a car for someone drunk driving, crashing into and killing someone.

If you're reading this and have a blog or a myspace or whatever, be smart. Don't post stuff that contains personal information such as where you live, your phone number, etc. It's just not safe. I know many parents have concerns about their children on myspace. If parents would teach their kids what's okay to put down and what's not, we'd be in a better place.

---

So that was the majority of the day, spending time down in Thousand Oaks. I was suprisingly not very tired considered I worked last night from 9pm to 3am. I woke up at about 9:30am, so i got about 5 hours of sleep. There wasn't any traffic heading down below, but there was a lot on the way up. I'll tell ya. The 405 North to the 5 North exchange is absolutely terrible. On the 14 freeway towards the Antelope Valley, there seemed to be a huge accident southbound, slowing traffic to a dead halt on the southbound side, and also creating a bit of traffic on the northbound side. Hope everyone involved in that was okay.

Anyway, that's mostly it for today. The DaVinci Code came out and I do plan to see it. Should be interesting.

Peace out.

The End of the World. Seriously.

It's funny that my last post mentioned the end of the world... Cause 30 minutes ago, the end of the world started in Lancaster, California. It was a nice, hot day... now suddenly, we have a huge thunderstorm rolling into town. It's raining and the thunder's loud and the lightning's scary.

Looking out my window, I can view flashes of light strike down from the sky; coursing through the clouds... Even now as I type this, the rain is picking up. Oooh. I just remembered I left the windows open in my car. Be right back.

Wow. It's raining really really hard. Normally storms don't scare me, but just a few moments ago... my room flashed brightly and seconds later, a deep rumble and pop ran through our streets. Soon after, my power went off and car alarms on my street were sounding.

This is really weird.

But I'm Le Tired!

...okay. Well have a nap. THEN FIRE ZE MISSILES!

Just a quote from a funny flash animation called 'The End of the World'.

Yeah, so work today was pretty interesting. I was originally scheduled to come in at 9:30am, but they called me yesterday asking me to come in at 8am instead. Tom and Ruth, the Regional and District Managers (respectively), were to come in today to do a little check-up on our store. So, they asked me to come in so we could get the store all clean and ready. This involved sweeping, scrubbing, and mopping the store. Tiring work.

When they came in around noon-ish, they looked around a bit and made some nice comments. They left about an hour and a half later. I asked Maria, my manager, if they had said anything good, and she sighed, rolled her eyes and said, "They told me we're 'turning the ship around'". Apparently our store is considered an "Opportunity Store", which means is a nice way of saying that our sales suck and we need to get better.

Last year, the entire company had an increase of around 10% in sales from the previous year. Our store only had an increase of 4%. We were one of the two stores with the lowest gains, so we were picked to be an "Opportunity Store". Maria has to call headquarters every other week or so to update them on everything we're doing. Sounds like the suck.

So I got off work at 2pm and headed home. When I get there, my dad stops me before I head upstairs and tells me he needs my help with something. Not surprising to me though, as he asks me for something almost every other day. But this request is a bit harder than the ones before it. I guess he wants to buy clothing that's on sale here, send it to the Philippines and retail it at a higher cost. I don't know if that's illegal or not, I'm not going to say anything.

Anyway, he wants me to find out how Anchor Blue does their operations. Like the POS (Point-of-Sale) systems that we use, software, how we track inventory, blah, blah, blah. This is honestly something that I am not at all interested in. I have no clue where to start. I've already googled "POS Systems", but all I get are results that I have no clue what in the heck they're talking about. And I'm not about to go to my boss and ask her, "So my dad bought a bunch of stuff on clearance here and wants to sell it overseas for full price. What's the best way to go about doing that?"... You can see the problems with that.

*sigh*... I don't know what to do. My dad is wrapping his head around way to much at once. He's reading real estate books, wheatgrass books, practices piano all day, and is listening to CDs about making money. He owns two houses in the Philippines that he's trying to sell and he's looking for property here in the States. I told him, "You're just doing way too much, dad." He tells me that teaching piano just isn't cutting it and that he has to make the money. He's 50 and only has '5 more years to do it'. I just want the guy to retire already.

A part of me wants to be selfish and not help him at all, but what can I do. He's my dad. He's taken on so many ambitious projects, all of which have never worked. I guess it doesn't help any that mom has a great job and position where she's making a lot of money.

Anyway, that's a lot of honesty for right now. I'm thirsty and dying for a drink. So with that, I leave you. I'll probably post again later tonight.

Tuesday, May 16, 2006

So today was a day just like any other.

Actually, no it wasn't. That was just a lyric from a song by Jack's Mannequin that was in my head.

Today was pretty neat. I got to sleep in til 11am because I had no work. That was cool. Hopped online and jumped on AOL Instant Messenger. Justin and I had talked the previous night about going to get lunch and hanging out before he had to go work. We start conversing on AIM about random things like we always do.

I was pretty hungry so we decided to head to Del Taco for lunch. Before that, I had to hop in the shower. Actually, Justin and I decided that hopping in the shower would be a little dangerous, so I just stepped in the shower instead. I got ready and left for Of the Taco.

Let me tell you guys, even though Del Taco is nothing remotely close to true authentic mexican food, it's darn good and it's darn cheap. Right now Chicken Soft Tacos are going for 79 cents apiece. How do you top that?!? I ordered 5 of em and also an order of chili cheese fries. (aside: if you know me, chili cheese fries is one of my most favorite things in the world) Justin, always having to 'one-up' me, ordered 6 chicken soft tacos.

We headed back to my house to enjoy the delicious snacks. Upon placing the bags of food on the table, I looked in the bag to find, much to my dismay, only FOUR tacos in the bag. Needless to say, I was pretty frazzled. But it was alright. I had my delightful fries to make up for it.

We downed our meals fairly quickly and sat on the couch to watch some good ol' television. One of my favorite shows to watch is "My Super Sweet Sixteen" on MTV. Not because I think that what they're getting is cool and I'm so jealous, but rather because it keeps me humble knowing that there are people out there that are so incredibly spoiled. "BUT DAD, I WANT THAT BMW!!! IT'S SO JUICY!"... wow. just wow.

After that, we headed up to my room to hop on the computer and make some changes to the color scheme of his blog. Check it out. It's neato looking. We also watched some funny videos on YouTube.com. One of which was a hillarious Alex Rodriguez clip...

Wow.

Justin had to leave for work soon after, leaving me to play some World of Warcraft. I haven't played as much of it lately, but I do still play regularly.

Tomorrow I'm due to come into work at 8am. Supposedly our District and Regional Managers are coming in to do some kind of inspection/check-up. So my boss wanted to bring the expert (me) in a little early to clean up some of the dirty work. Haha just kidding. I'm not that great. (But really... I am.)

So that's the blog for the day. I'm still trying to cram in Blogs because I have to speak about it this Friday at a seminar, so I don't want the kids to go home, look up my blog and see absolutely no entries since like April. Not impressive.

Okay, that's it for now. More to come tomorrow (later today).

I would not mind if someone bought me this...

Get me one please. kthx.

Justin is my Muse?

Normally I associate the word 'muse' with the image of a beautiful woman with an aura of radiating grace... Justin is neither of those things. But we were talking earlier and he suggested I use this as my title. So, I have.

Anyway, this past week has been reaaalllyy eventful. The first thing that comes to my mind is that one of my managers had to fill out an accident report about me. I had dropped a bottle of cologne on my foot while I was wearing flip flops. It busted up my big toe and left it bruised and bleeding. Pretty cool stuff. My manager said (jokingly I hope) "Well at least the bottle didn't break"... Haha. Good lookin out.

This past week has been pretty crazy/hectic. Between a bunch of work, mother's day, and feeling sick; life has been crazy.

One of the things I've been trying to do lately is to have a really positive outlook on life. Just being more optimistic. I'm content with where I am in life and I think that makes me happy.

So... I don't have much to say right now, mostly because I've forgotten what's happen in the last month.

I'm trying to cram as many blogs in as I can because I'm supposed to talk about it at my local HOBY seminar in Thousand Oaks this friday.

This week is even crazier with work. I work over 30 hours. Today I worked from 6am to 2p. We're doing visual changes, price corrections, and inventory this week. Not fun.

Anyway, drop me a holler when you can.

Man, so I'm lazy.

okay, I really love this blog. I love doing it. I enjoy it. Lately though, I've just been un-motivated (is that a word?) to post new entries. Maybe it's because my life is a boring chain of events...?

Haha. Not really. Okay. An update.

1. I'm working on getting promoted at Anchor Blue to Assistant Manager.
2. That hasn't been going too well because I've been late on many occasions.
3. We'll see what happens.

1. I've been asked to speak at my local State HOBY's Seminar in May.
2. The topic is "How Youth Are Portrayed in Media" and I'm going to be talking about this here blog.
3. Better start updating!

1. I moved my room around a bit.
2. It's more spacious.
3. Change is good.

1. I really like Wetzel's Pretzels.
2. My pockets are being emptied.
3. Mmmm... Cheese Dogs.

Gah, I really want to take more pictures. I need to. /sigh

The sky has been really beautiful the last couple days. If you've seen my pictures, most of them are of things that are up. Trees, skylines, the sky, ceilings, etc. I dunno. I have a fascination with what's above us.

Okay, short update for now.

Will add more, laterz.

Thursday, April 06, 2006

I know, I know. I suck.

Yeah... believe it or not, people have been asking me, "WHY HAVEN'T YOU BEEN UPDATING YOUR BLOG!?!?! BLAHAGG!! ALL CAPS!!1!ONE!"... I wasn't aware so many eyes graced the musings of a 19 yo kid who has all too much time on his hands. COMMENT. kk?

So, I've pretty much been wasting my life the last couple weeks on an unhealthy binge of World of Warcraft. If you know anything about the game, you'll understand this. I'm going for field marshal and after I get it, I'm done. I'm probably uninstalling it. We'll see. It's a good time killer.

Between melting faces and role-playing (jeez. there really is no hope for me) I've been working a lot at Anchor Blue. It's a great job. I get decent hours and I love the people. Customer Service is just my thing. I'm good at it. I enjoy it. I get people to buy things. It works.

Right now is an exciting time for me because I'm working on getting a promotion to assistant manager. They like me there. I've tried to go out of my way to be kind, throrough, and innovative. Today, I think I impressed Maria (my boss) when I showed her what I had done in the stock room. We have these crates that have flip flops in em. I sorted them out, but them up on the shelves and hung the smallest pair of the corresponding footware on the outside of each crate. She liked it and said it would help a lot when doing stock checks. (Score one point for me.)

Anyway, tomorrow (today, Thursday) I'm supposed to go in at 12pm for two hours to meet with Maria's boss, the District Manager. Nervous? A little. By the time anyone reads this, that will already have happened. So I guess I shouldn't be all that nervous.

Anyway, I couldn't sleep, so I got food from the kitchen, started browsing blogs, and thought... man I really haven't updated in a while. So there ya go. An update.

Oh btw, I support Mockumedia. It's the brainchild of Michael Murray (cool guy who went to my High School) and his friend Joseph Engel. They provide commentary on movies, music, news, etc. I found myself giggling like a schoolgirl in some parts. It's completely improvised, so it's funny like that. Check out their Myspace profile. (For the internetly ignorant, click 'myspace profile'. duh).

Ok, I need to finish eating and get to sleep. peace out yallz.

Sunday, March 19, 2006

Wait! Stop!

I shall explain the title later...

So today (Saturday) was pretty cool. slightly eventful.

I wake up at 11am. Thank goodness for sleeping in late on Saturdays.

Get to work at 12pm.

Work was kinda interesting.

So one of my coworkers Kenny, this 17-year old guy; senior in high-school is working with me today. He doesn't look 17. I thought maybe he was my age (19) or a little older. He's on register and I'm out and about on Fitting Room duty and customer servicing. After he wraps up with a customer he comes to me and is like...

"Dude, remember that lady who came in with the little girl who was dancing around all over the place?"

I nod.

"Well, I was ringing up her stuff and when I handed her the receipt she gave me a slip of paper with her phone number on it."

I'm shocked. "Are you serious?"

"Yeah! She's like in her late 20s too! She was just like 'You were really nice.'"

haha. He told me he is nowhere near interested, though. lol.

--An hour later--

"Oh man, Cy."

"what now?"

"This lady I was ringing up left some money on the counter. I told her she forgot her change and she said to keep it. She was tipping me!"

What!? I have never heard of anyone in retail getting tips. What's with this Kenny guy? I told him, "Haha man, looks like the older ladies have an attraction to you."

He laughs. "That's not funny, man!"

He's a cool kid.

Another odd thing happened at work today. While I was on fitting room duty, a guy came up to me and asked to use one. He had 4 items, so I hand him a tag, unlock a fitting room for him and let him get to business.

I float around the store for a bit, customer servicing, let a girl into a fitting room and go back to more customer servicing. I remembered this guy was browsing with his girlfriend, who I could not spot anywhere in the store. I had only let the guy into the fitting rooms, as we don't allow couples to use the same room. But apparently, she had gone in while I wasn't paying attention.

I then thought, "Man, this guy is taking a long time to try on 4 things."

My first reaction is to think that he might be shoplifting. The other girl I let into the fitting rooms had already left, so I head back there, and I swear I heard some... well, let's just say it was suggestive of something. It was faint, not blatantly or obnoxiously loud... but still there. Or at least I thought so.

I thought I heard a shushing noise too, so I kinda hung around just to confirm my suspicions... but then I was called to the cashwrap. The couple came out shortly after.

Did the two join the retail equivalent of the "Mile High Club"? I dunno... but it was something to ponder over for a couple hours.

After I got off work at 5pm, I played on my computer for a bit.

Emily, Justin L., Mallory, and her boyfriend Mike came over and we chatted for a bit while playing Jenga.

It's funny, because I'm like the hired entertainer for my friends. I'm the one to look to to plan things for the whole group or to come up with some sort of game. I deliver. Tonight, I played the role of the 5th wheel. Which I don't mind too much. Did I mention that I plan to be in a dating relationship this year? At least it's a goal.

After a bit of that, we head to Wal Mart to look for another game to buy. I have Cranium, Monopoly, Twister, Scene It, Guess Who, Jenga, Bop It Xtreme, and a cool game called Hillarium, but we've played all of those out. We were disappointed to find nothing interesting at Wal Mart. I'm trying to find this game called Curses. Can't find it anywhere. I may have to resort to buying it online.

So after Wal Mart, we head to Marie Callendar's where we order dessert... I order mozarella sticks because I was hungry. I'm always hungry. We played some mind games that frustrated Mike and Emily, but we pitied them so much, we told them how they worked. We talked for awhile while eating our pie and cheesecake. It was nice.

So anyway, the title of the blog comes from a memorable event that happened between Mallory and I...

...but I'm tired. So i'll tell the story tomorrow. *sunday*

Peace out yallz!

Time flies when you're having fun.

...well it sure seemed that way tonight.

Also, it seems that recently my blog entries have been written past midnight... my sleep schedule's jacked.

Ok, so tonight after church, I dropped by the house to grab some quick eats. I then headed out to Palmdale to my friend Justin's house to play poker with him, his girlfriend Emily, and the other Justin.

To make a long story short, Justin Lebens got knocked out first, then Emily, then I did. I lost on a big hand, leaving Justin Gott with $15 more than when he started... except sorta not, because I didn't have any money on me. So, once again I am in debt to one of my friends. This happens often. My return rate is something up to 3-4 months or so. =D

After that game ended like around 11pm or so, we got to talkin and shootin' the breeze. Everything from High School Memories to drunkeness to lesbians to film noir. We talked about a lot of stuff. We were having a good time though, and didn't realize the time until Emily said she had to go. It was about 2:30am by then. Pretty late.

All in all, it was a good night. A good time of catching up and enjoying each other's company. Thumbs up.

Wednesday, March 15, 2006

I've got the munchies.

Yeah... so because I went to sleep at like 5am today, I woke up at about 3pm... did absolutely nothing, because, thankfully, I was not scheduled for work.

There's not much to eat at the house right now, I can't fall asleep... so I think I'm going to Jack-in-the-Box to get some eats. Enjoyable.

Aight, that's all I got.

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

I'm.. *yawns* ..sleepy.

Interesting day today. I wake up at about 1pm. Check my phone.

"You have a new voicemail"

Call the voicemail. Press '1' to hear the new message.

"Hey, Cy. It's Veronica. It says here that you're scheduled to be here at 10am. Didn't get a message saying that you weren't. Please call me back as soon as you get this. I have no one here with me for opening."

Press '7' to delete it. Check the time of the call. 10:32am.

crap.

I check my schedule. Sure enough, I was scheduled from 10am-12pm and from 8pm-3am. I forgot I was working a split shift.

I decide to pass the time to 8p with more World of Warcraft. 7:45p rolls around. I hop in the car and head to work.

Melissa sees me and says

"Oh hey, Cy. We didn't know you were coming in tonight. Maria said we'd be going home early if you don't come in."

Oh...

I walk into the stockroom where Maria and our assistant manager Brianne are. Maria says

"Cy! Missed you this morning. Were you OK?"

I explain to them that I forgot I was supposed to work a split shift.

"Oh Okay. Just wanted to make sure you were fine. We can talk about it later."

...what they really wanted to know was... "WHERE THE HECK WHERE YOU?"

So... we work. and work. on the visual change. The entire Men's side is redone. I did wall 2, so look at that and be proud.

12:30am rolls around and Maria asks if we're ready for our 30-minute break... which for some reason whenever it is, it is always called "lunch". I say yes, I'm pretty hungry, and she lets me go out to get food. I drive to Carl's Jr... and sit in the drive-thru right by the menu for literally 5 or 6 mins...

"Hello?"... "Hello!?" <-- for 5-6 minutes.

I pull forward and aparently they close at 11p.

I go to Jack in the Box and get a burger and fries. Eh, it's not all that great. I'm sippin on the large lemonade I got from there right now, too.

I return to Anchor Blue and we work some more til 3:30am.

Now I am home. I killed 40 minutes playing WoW, until I realized...

I'm dead freakin tired.

So now, after writing this blog, I am even more tired.

so... that's it.

good night.

The week in pictures. (sorta)

...so i got this idea that i should take pics everyday wherever i go. Well, it was a good idea, but pretty much, just that.

I did manage to get pics for two of the days!

Sunday i dressed up all spiffy for church...

That same day we went to Thai Cafe for lunch...

Thai Tea is... well, amazing...

Saturday i went to work, and when i got out at 9:30 i found this...

What goes best with cold weather?...

No, thank you, Starbucks.

I'm going to try to do a better job this week.
...oh yeah. I stayed up kinda late changing the site layout a tad bit. Hope you like it.

Another video... haha

On a related note, I was at Justin Gott's house on Wednesday night with both Justins and we played Mario Kart 64. I killed them. In the courses and in battle mode. A rematch is scheduled soon.

On a sidenote, it snowed today in the Antelope Valley. Wow.

I work at Anchor Blue tomorrow from 5pm-9:30pm. Come say hi.

Tuesday, March 07, 2006

I've caught the VIBE once more.

Today was my first day back on the job at Anchor Blue. Apparently, Maria my boss is going to give me more hours this time around. I worked an 8 hour shift today. I have not had to stand this long in quite a while. Oh, and my pay's been moved up to $7/hour; a quarter more than last year. It was good to be back. I'm still familiar with the register and all that, so it's cool.

We bought two movies today; Shaun of the Dead ($10 at Wal Mart) and Jarhead ($16). We watched Jarhead tonight. It was the first time any of us had seen it. My thoughts on it? Incredible. Sam Mendes does an amazing job. I guess he also did American Beauty and Road to Perdition; two other movies that I also enjoy.

It's quite vulgar, but I bet it's a pretty darn accurate description of how the Corps really is. To think... I seriously thought about joining the Marines for a while... I haven't told many people that, but yeah, it was a serious consideration.

Well... I work tomorrow from 10am-2pm, so come drop by Anchor Blue and say "Wassup, Cy??"... That would be neat.

More thoughts for later...

...I have more to put up, but I was lazy. For now, here are some pictures on the day at the airport!

Thought 2

My friends. No one in the Antelope Valley has any idea that I am also coming home with my folks. Boy, are they in for a surprise. I’m trying to think of the best ways to drop the secret on them.

I figure with Justin, I’ll have my mom call him to come and pick up his My Chemical Romance CD that I borrowed ages ago and the first season of Lost. When he knocks on the door, I’ll be the one to answer it. That’ll be shocking. I suppose I’ll have to swear him to secrecy not to tell anyone. We’ll probably head over to his house where I can surprise his family as well. The Gott’s are a pretty cool family. They’re up there on my “it” list.

Lebens is going to be a harder one. Well, maybe not. I suppose I can just go to In-N-Out when he’s working and nonchalantly walk up, order a #1, ketchup only, with a chocolate shake in addition to the drink. He’ll probably say “What’s up, dude!?”, like he always does. It’ll be nice. I like surprising people.

As for Mallory and Emily, I have no idea how I can surprise them without waiting too long. I don’t want to be in the AV for a whole week and not have them know that I’m home. I suppose a simple phone call will have to do.

For JR, Grant, Fred, Charlie, Leila, Luke, Grace, Alden, and that whole crew, I think I will just show up to devotional on Wednesday unannounced. On Sunday, the whole congregation will know that I’m back. I might even song lead. Haha, that would be good.

For Becky, Tom, and all those cool kids, I’ll give them a simple phone call. Or I’ll ask Justin or Lebens to put some kind of gathering together. We’ll see.

Thoughts from the Airport

02.19.06

As I write this I am sitting at a table with my dad’s Apple Powerbook G4. We are in the international terminal at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila. I’ve got Microsoft Word open and I’m typing freely as thoughts flow out of my mind. Maybe they’re not really flowing freely. Actually, it’s a mess of thoughts. It seems really difficult to sort them all out; maybe even a bit overwhelming. I’m sniffling a lot because I smelled some cologne yesterday that had something I’m allergic to. It’s an uncomfortable feeling really.

Thought 1:
Dang. I’m so excited to be going home. I’ve missed my mom, my dog, my friends, my home, and my routine since day one in the Philippines. I’m glad my mom suggested that I come home earlier than planned with them. My time in the Philippines has been great, but man, there’s really no place like home. Lancaster is my home.

This is Sick.

I ROFL at Dancing.

ROFL = Roll on the floor, laughing.

So tonight, I go out with Mike, my parents, and King to "The Venue", or as I like to call it, "Ze Venu". The Venue is this nightclub/concert hall thing that people here in Davao like to go to at night... in their life... So Davao has a 'nightlife'. This is a word that is unfamiliar to an Antelope Valleyan.

Anyway, while at Ze Venu, we sat around, listened to some loud dance music and drank beer. And yes, I had some. 3, in fact. To be totally honest, I never drink alcohol unless my parents are there. The one time I drank without them around was actually the first time I touch a drop of alcohol and I actually had a blog entry that I wrote about that two years ago. First time having alcohol = first time being drunk. haha, didn't know my limits. Eh, you live and learn. On that same subject, when I do have a couple beers, my parents make sure I don't have too much. heh. Thanks, mom and dad. I actually feel that if you have to alter your state of mind in order to have a good time, something's wrong with you. Mainly, I'll have a beer or two just to "share a drink with someone". Aparently, it's rude here to not drink with someone if you go out with them somewhere.

Eh, enough bout da bears. I mean, ze beers. So at Ze Venu, there's this band that is playing this weekend. They're actually not too bad. Nothing spectacular, but nothing terrible. They did some nice covers of songs by Beyonce, Santana, the Eagles... it was cool. Between their sets random dance club music would play and people would go up to the dance floor to shake their groove thing.

One group that caught my attention in particular, was a gathering of 3 guys and 2 girls. All but one of them were Filipino. The other, a Korean exchange student (after being here for 4 months, I can tell). Anyway, after watching them for awhile, it became obvious to me that the girls were trying to give the Korean girl dance lessons. And I'm sorry to say, but it was one of the most amusing things I've ever seen in my life.

Now I don't claim to be an expert at dancing. No sir. In fact, the girl could probably have gotten a chuckle out of seeing me dance. What's with dancing? The whole moving the hips thing, where to put your arms and flap em around? I dunno.

So yeah, that was the highlight of my evening, drinking a couple brewskies with my folks and watching 2 Filipina girls give a korean girl a lesson in 'sexy' dancing. LOL

well... the time is drawing nearer to when I will be returning to the States. I can't believe it's almost been 4 months. A third of a year. Wow.

Do I have a sexy dance? ROFL.

It's Easier.

To not give your all. To be weak. To not live up to your full potential. To be lazy. To be selfish. To be distanced. To be isolated. To loathe in self-pity. To sleep all day. To not pour out your heart. To lie. To cheat. To steal. To forget. To remember. To hold a grudge. To let go.

To make life harder is to make it easier.

Doesn't that make sense? It seems that if we always take the easy route through things, life actually becomes harder. Though, not always in an external way visible to others on the outside, but rather on the inside; a battle within our consciousness and spirit for what is and what isn't; what should and what shouldn't.

To make life easier is to make it harder.

It's odd how life can be so difficult and yet so simple. Though for others, maybe it's not so simple... maybe the choices aren't so clear. But maybe they are. Maybe we choose not to see things as simple as they are. Maybe we choose to make things difficult.

Iunderstand that I am speaking in obscurities, but it makes perfect sense to me.

I tend to get the best of myself.

I'm lazy.

Tis true.

Hmm... so January 29th was my birthday. I am now 19 years old. Goodness gracious.
The friday before that, my mom and Mike, one of my really great friends flew in to Davao... they will be here til the 19th of this month. Great times.

Today I was in Kaloi's wedding. He and Lea are now married. that's awesome. They asked me to play something for their wedding on the saxophone. I did. It was alright. I'm always embarassed to play my instruments in front of people. Honest reason is because I'm out of practice. That's embarassaing.

Eh... yeah the blog thing... I'm not so great at it right now. lol. laziness.

This be them pick-chos.

So here it is... I haven't updated in over a week, but that's ok, because what I'm giving you guys is worth all that! Anyway, it all starts with School...

This is Rey, one of my classmates in Philippine History. He is seriously one of the funniest kids I've ever met. He's pretty much your typical class clown. And I love it.

This was the boy I wrote about in my blog titled "Circumstance".

This is a street corner right by my school. You can see how different it is from the United States. Check out the vehicles. They're called Jeepneys... the major public transportation system in the Philippines.

Our church threw a Christmas party with a retro 60's and 70's theme of "Staying Alive". The Campus ministry decided to go "Grease" style... and well that's me dancing. LOL.

I spent my Christmas week in Kiamba (my mom's hometown). On the way there, we stopped at a mall and I picked up a book at a used book store entitled Intesnsity written by Dean Koontz. It was one of the best books I've ever read. And I don't like reading... since this book, I've read another book by Koontz called The Taking and am now reading another one by him called Fear Nothing. I'm pretty much a devoted Koontz fan now.

Dean Koontz's Intensity. I read this novel in three days. And I don't even like literature that much.

My cousins and I in Kiamba love to play this game called "1, 2, 3, Pass" where you pretty much try to get 4 of a kind by passing cards around in a circle. The first one to get 4 of a kind, slaps his/her hand on the table. Everyone else is supposed to slap their hand down too. The last person to slap gets a penalty... our favorite penalty is lipstick.

Playing "1, 2, 3, Pass"

I came in 2nd place pretty much... (that's good)... but this is what I looked like sitting well in second place:

The "1, 2, 3, Pass Gang"

Kiamba is a beautiful town set right on the southern coast line of the Philippines. Thus, there are beautiful beaches.

Woodbridge Beach in Kiamba.

Christmas Eve we had a family party and some good eats...

Most of the fam gathered around for dinner.

You might be wondering... "is that a pig on the table?"
...well, Indeed it is. "Lechon Baboy" is a delicacy in the Philippines. It's pretty much roasted pig. It's delicious.

This pig was the victim in the latest slasher movie "Porked".

Kiamba was great because it was just a nice time to spend with cousins, aunts and uncles.

Some of my cousins at the plaza in Kiamba.

Did I say Kiamba's a beautiful place?

Kiamba just before dawn.

My closest cousins and I on the dock.

More family.

There's a lot of dogs in the Philippines... and no, Tom. I did not eat any. I've seen some unfortunate dogs in my life, but none so much as this one...

The dog from Hell.

My cousin Giselle in New York came up with a slogan to put on a t-shirt for us... "Got Adobo?" parodied off the "Got Milk?" ad slogans. Adobo is a very popular Filipino dish.

Cousins, nieces, nephews and "Got Adobo?"

I returned to Davao City (my dad's hometown) where I spent New Year's.

This is portion of the entire Serrano clan gathered in front of our house.

Most of my cousins on my dad's side are all older than me... Most in their 30s. The majority of them already have children.

Me, nieces, nephews, and someone's head.

It's a Filipino tradition that in the coming of the New Year or a major event, money is rolled up in little balls and thrown to the family to symbolize good luck and fortune and coming wealth and hapiness in the coming year... It was pretty fun to watch and everyone had a good time.

Catching the money.

I also have some photos that I've added to my deviantArt.com. Check em out...
"Ocean Sunset" - an incredible capture I got at dawn in Kiamba.
"Mother and Child" - a shot of my cousin's wife and their child.
"Pikoy" - a close up shot of my uncle's really rad parrot.
"Pikoy Dos" - another close up shot of my uncle's really rad parrot.

Yep, that's all I've got for now. I have taken more pictures, but I haven't uploaded them to my computer. So that's pretty much all the pictures from before 2006. Hope you enjoyed em!

Pictures...

...are coming tomorrow. Hold on to your hats.

So today is my father's 50th birthday. Wow. 50 years old. Congrats, man. That's half a century. Amazingness. And you dont look much older than 42 or something.

Happy birthday, pops.

Hey HOBY, HOBY, Are you ready?

so... every summer, hundreds of people from all over the world gather together in Washington D.C. for a week and a half of motivation, learning, enlightenment, and fun. This huge event is called the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership World Leadership Congress. of the HOBY WLC.

I now officially have the distinct pleasure and honor to be the assistant to the Director of Ambassadors (DA). The DA is pretty much the chairperson for the whole event so she has a lot of work to do. My responsibility is to help her with all that work.

Anyway. I'm pumped.

/sigh

So being back in school isn't all that fun. Christmas break was awesome. Got to hang out with family and that was great.

Now, I'm back at school and I'm disliking it more and more each day. I'm finding it increasingly frustrating to interact with people here and with me being the extrovert that I am, is very difficult for me. I'm normally talkative. I'm normally outgoing. Yet here, it feels impossible to be my 'normal' self. I want my friends. I want my 'normal' way of life back in the U.S.A..

Granted, I have learned so much in my stay here, but I am so ready to come home. And I have THREE months left! I guess I must be being ungrateful or something, but really... I'm not being myself here and I hate that.

I've tried. I try to talk or joke around with some of my classmates, even some of my family, but they don't get it. Needless to say, I just feel so left out here. It's like everybody's in on some kind of joke that I'm totally oblivious of.

It sucks that my parents didn't raise me to learn tagalog, but that's just the way the dice landed.

Eh, so with my frustration, I've secluded myself and stayed in my room most of the time either on the computer or reading a book. This culture shock is starting to get to me. I've really never been here this long... and it seems to me right now that three more months is going to be torture.

Luckily, my mom and one of my best friends is coming for three weeks on the 25th of January. My 19th birthday is on the 29th, so they'll be here for that, which I'm very excited for.

Honestly, I'm just so worn out from being here. I don't have many real friends, if any. So emails and occasional phone calls and voice chats online is all I have. My friends back home are what sustain me through tough times, and I don't have that here. I'm not getting constant refreshment, so I just feel so freakin tired every day.

I miss home.

Saturday, January 07, 2006

Oh man, i'm sick.

Sick like allergy sick. It's mega annoying.

Well happy passed holidays to everyone! I know it's been almost a month since I've posted, but i've been out of the city for a while and when I came back it was all work and no play. I don't have the energy to really type out a huge blog right now, but just wanted to tell you all... that i'm alive and kickin, even if the kickin is more like a little punt. I'm so tired and sick.

Meh.

The Coolest Animal Ever. EVAR.

...is King Kong. Hands down. The dude's got mad strength, can tear up t-rexes and still be a softie for the ladies. He is THE MAN.

So if you haven't guessed... if you're that thick... I just got back from seeing King Kong at SM Mall with my cousin Ken and King's (the guy who's lived in our house for the last two years) younger sister Tata (it's just a nickname). On a sidenote, King is here in Davao now! It's awesome. He's like a brother to me, so it's really cool to see him again.

This movie rocked my socks so hard I had to buy another pair. Let me just tell you guys that I haven't had this much fun in a movie since... well since I can remember. It's a great ride for 95% of the film. The beginning had my guessing whether or not the rest of the movie was going to be good... I wasn't digging the screenplay in the beginning and some of the camera tricks used later in the film were just kinda weird and distracting to me... eh. But don't get me wrong. The movie is freakin AWESOME. Hats off to Peter Jackson.

So everyone, sorry about the lack of blogs this week. I've been studying like a madman for my prelim exams. The semester here is divided into three grading periods: Prelims, Midterms, and Finals. This last week before Christmas break (merry jesusbirthday by the way) I had six planned exams. I say "planned" because yesterday I was happily surprised that our Algebra teacher decided not to give us one. She said that she was "tired of grading wrong papers". Don't misunderstand that. She's a great teacher, but she has crappy students. Me of course, not being one of them. They don't study, they don't show up for class, and they don't bother to make an effort. Well, they can have fun taking the same class next semester. This teacher is not going to pass them.

So exams this week were so surprisingly and ridiculously easy. I don't know why, but for some reason in EVERY class (I kid you not), I was the first person to finish the exam. And in every class mostly everyone looked at me in awe/surprise/disgust while I turned in my paper. I don't get it, but I think Filipinos were just taught differently on how to take tests. I have a feeling that they all read through all the questions first and then answer them... slowly. That's not how I do things. I like my time, thanks. But they were easy. I'm pretty sure I passed with flying colors. It's in the bag. I was most worried about my history exam today, because I had absolutely NO prior knowledge of Philippine History before coming here... but the test was shockingly easy. All mutliple choice and a lot of the questions had these kinds of options:

a) A blatantly wrong answer
b) The correct answer
c) Maybe
d) I guess

I was chuckling as I made my way through the test. About 6 of 50 questions were riddles or trick questions, such as "If a rooster lays 48 eggs in one day, how many eggs does he lay in 1 hour?"

a) 2
b) 3
c) 6
d) 0

If you answered (d) then you're a smart cookie. Roosters don't lay eggs, dummy. So yeah, questions like that. And the last question was (and this seems to be a popular question of EVERY teacher) "What is your teacher's full name?". I've gotten this question in most of my other classes (actually oddly enough only classes that are taught by women) in previous quizzes and in exams this week. Sadly though, I blanked on the answer more than once for those classes. Yeah, I don't know my teacher's names. Sad, I know. Here, we call them "Sir" and "Maam" so much that that becomes their name. "Did you talk to Sir yesterday?", "What assignment did maam give out last meeting?"... Different.

This week has been a lot of fun. I'm glad it's over though and that Christmas break is finally here. OH! Some really cool news today. Kaloi... you remember him owner of KIC (Kaloi's Internet Cafe) told me that he and Lea talked and they want me to be a groomsman in their wedding. WOW. What is it with me and being in people's weddings? I'm really honored, though. Now, I definitely have to learn a saxaphone piece for their wedding.

Tomorrow, I'm waking up early because we're doing a community service thing with the church. This week we did a used clothing and can goods drive, so tomorrow will be giving it out. It'll be really great.

On a related note, today I took a taxi to school because I was running late. As I got out of the cab, a homeless lady with a child in her arms approached me for a handout. Reflecting back on the time I denied a kid one peso (I actually saw him again, gave him money, then took some pictures of him... those later), I was convicted to be more compassionate. I gave the woman a 20 peso bill. Others saw this, and immediately, I was bum rushed by a mob of poor people. Seriously. There were hands... everywhere. Grabbing too. I reached into my pocket and grabbed a handful of change. I tried giving a peso out to each person, but that was a little difficult as everyone was swarming around me and pushing each other out of the way. Before it got too messy I said sternly, wala gyud. No more. And I walked swiftly to the gate. I was kinda frazzled by the whole thing. Man, poverty is powerful.

King Kong is set in the time of the depression era of the U.S. Compared to the current state of the Philippines, the homeless during the depression era is nothing compared to the homeless of the Philippines and other third-world countries today. Just an observation.

Well, I gotta get up early tomorrow, so that's all for tonight. And by all, I mean this is a freakin long blog. Good night.

Relax, It's Gonna Be Okay.

...seriously folks. This is the conclusion I have come to. No matter what happens, hey, it's gonna be fine. Life happens, you know? How can we have a say or choice in the things that happen externally? We can't. But what we can do, is learn to cope and adapt to those things.

Yep, so I've got joy again. I'm hopeful again. That's all I have to say. God is good. I'm affirmed of that everyday now.

It's so funny how he uses some pretty awkward or terrible (seeming) situations to really teach us and mold us for what's better. It's neat.

"If God will bring you to it, He'll bring you through it" - Thanks Sarah Grover for that one.

More on this later. I have exams to study for this week... then CHRISTMAS BREAK! WO0T!

Circumstance

Today after school, I sat on the steps in front of campus waiting for my dad to pick me up. As I sat, I contemplated my life. I thought about the person I am. The person I've become. I need to figure myself out.

As I was waiting, I saw a little boy. He had to be maybe 8 or 9 years old. His face and his shaggy hair was darkened from the dirt that covered him. He was homeless. He wore an old and tattered t-shirt. The shirt was also filthy and had several large holes in it. He wore a pair of raggedy shorts and flip-flops.

When I sat down, this boy came up to me and said, "Kuya, isang piso?". He was asking me for a peso to spare him. Kuya is a term used for respect. You say it to someone older than you, but not that much older than you. What shocked me was that I was so quick to say back to him "wala gyud"... meaning that I don't have any on me. This was a lie. Why was I so cold to his need? Thinking about it now makes me sick. He looked at me and walked off to ask others the same question.

This boy was so desperate, yet he didn't seem desperate. He was cracking jokes with some of the students coming out. He was throwing the coins he did receive around on the ground - tossing them just for fun. He was trying to get people to avail of the taxis parked in front of the campus. I observed him open the door for one student and she gave him a peso. From this, he learned something. I watched him as he tried to open and close any door of any car that pulled up to the sidewalk. This boy was in need.

My heart went out to him, but yet I was still so greedy. If I see him tomorrow, I'll have to give him some money.

While this boy was begging, another boy walked down the street holding his mom's hand. He looked to be about the same age as the homeless boy. He was dressed in his school uniform. Clean. Obviously took a shower that morning. His hair kept clean and cut. And he had someone - his mom. The homeless boy had no one.

It was an interesting thing to watch. One boy so affected by poverty and another boy so fortunate. What was the difference in these two lives? Could they possibly have had the same opportunities? Or are they victims of circumstance?

It's been occuring to me that some things are not in our control. Actually, quite a lot of things in life are not manageable or predictable. I wonder. If I had a different family, how much different would I be? If I had not gone through the experiences I have, would I know the things I know now? What other possibilities could there be?

God says he has a plan for our lives. That's it's not to harm us, but rather to prosper us. Was his plan for that homeless boy to beg for money to eat dinner that night? Was his plan for the fortunate boy to be well off enough to actually have an education? Why did he choose them? Why did God choose the path he did for these two boys?

Why has God chosen the path he has for my life? Why has he put this and that circumstance in my path? Why have I been elected to be faced with certain trials that others never have to even think about? Right now, I wish I struggled with different things. I wish I had a different set of trials. A different set of temptations. But I suppose that I need to grin and bear what I am going through. I've been through difficult situations before and thankfully I have been able to look back and see lessons learned from them. I know that that is also true for what I am going through right now.

Is my circumstance unique? I doubt it. I'm wondering what the outcome will be from this. God knows everything that has, will, and is happening. I trust in that. But I'm curious, is there really circumstances? Or do we shape our own problems and outcomes. I'm not sure, but our actions and our choices shape what happen to us in the future. So my question is... Will I make those right choices and take the right actions? What is right anyway? Isn't all things brought into our life, whether from good choices or bad, meant to teach us?

My thoughts are a mess right now. Thinking can get you into places you don't want to go... but I don't think we can be mindless sheep.

Hmm.

ARRGGHH

Why the heck am I like this? Why do I do the things I don't want to do?? I know I'm a sinful being. I know it's our nature to act like this, but why the heck cant i change!? Am I doomed to a life full of the same sickening routine? Up mountains, down in the pits and back up again?? I hate myself. I hate the person that I am. I hate how I can't simply say no. Why I'm not strong enough to stand firm. Why I can't just be a good Christian!!

My life feels like its crashing. People close to me are turning into betrayers and people I can't trust. I have no love in my heart. I have no sense of self-worth in my being.

Yeah I know, you might be thinking "Wow, this is not like Cy... or man, what's going on here."

Let me tell you guys something. I've got secrets. I've got some pretty sickening darkness within myself. Yeah, I've told people... yeah my desire is to change, but what the heck! I keep screwing it up. I screw up relationships. I'm screwing up my life! It's in times like this that I need God the most, but I am way too prideful to admit to that right away.

Guys, this is a really dark period in my life right now... It's not like it's been this way since I've been in the Philippines, but a recent confrontation has brought out the demons within me again. I need to rely on God's strength to get out of this. To ask for forgiveness, bask in his grace, and move on with being a loving disciple.

WHY IS THERE SO MUCH CONFLICT IN LIFE?? WHY DO WE HURT SO MUCH? WHY IS THERE SO MUCH PAIN! WHY DO THE PEOPLE WE TRUST DISAPPOINT US IN THE HARDEST WAYS!

It's because it helps us to see God more, right? That's the stock Christian answer. But dang. It's a lot easier said than done when you're in the heat of the battle. Have I given up? Definitely not. I haven't even begun to fight.

Sorry everyone for the unique tone of this post. It's what I'm feeling in my heart right now that NEEDS to be let out.

Last night, I cried in my room for 30 freakin minutes. Ashamed of myself. Ashamed of someone close to me. Ashamed of my situation. Ashamed of my weakness and my stupidity.

I need to make my body my slave. I need to get this thing under control. For God. For myself. For my family. For my friends. I'm hurting people I love and that is not my intention.

Thoughts are just coming off the top of my head right now. I'm anticipating in the near future some bad things. Bad things are happening, but I don't know if they'll turn out for the best or not. Things I'm used to. The life i knew is about to be turned upside down. It's going to be entirely different. And because of that, I am scared to death

I guess I have to trust in God. Have faith in him. But wow, it's hard. It is so hard.

I need to change. I need to repent... I want to. I have to. It's the right thing to do. How can I continue living in a life of lies and unhappiness? I can't. Not anymore. NOT ANYMORE! Something must be done.

The battle has begun.

Pray for me.

by the way. I'm a fake.

D8s

Have I mentioned that I'm learning A LOT here? It's crazy. Not only am I learning some interesting stuff in school, but I'm just learning a lot about myself, about people, about this country, about God's nature. Man. It's a crazy journey.

So last night I had a date with this really cool girl from my church named Aby. She's really nice and sweet and just cool to hang around. She's also 18... but she's in her second year of college.

Let me fill you guys in: Here in the Homeland, most kids graduate high school when they are 16. It's not because they all start really young, either. It's because they don't have Jr. High. Which I think is awesome. I hated Junior High. It was pretty much "Drama Fest Spectacular". Let me tell you something. Junior High kids are MEAN. And like an immature mean. They can tear you up and feed you to the dogs. They're bad.

I remember this one time last year when our Student Ministries class went over to the Middle School (Desert Christian has Preschool to 12th grade over three campuses) to just hang out with the kids, play games, beat them at football/basketball... and the like. Prior to this trip, I had already done worship a couple times for the Junior High chapels...

Ok so this particular day, we're hanging out with some of the little brats (i say with all lovingness in my heart) and one kid comes up... a 7th grader I think... and goes, "Oh yeah! I remember you! You sang in chapel a couple weeks ago."... "yeah, that's right" I respond... the kid replies sharply, "Oh man! You suck!".

I wanted to slap the little satan. Just kidding. But seriously, little kids can be cruel.

Ok, back to the date... yeah she's 18. Before our date at 6pm, It starts raining like OH-MY-GOSH-WHAT-THE-HECK-TROPICAL-STORM! No joke. From inside my room, the rain pounding on the roof sounds like we're being attacked by ze germans. When I leave my house at around 5:30pm to catch a jeep to downtown, I open the gate and immediately see that there's this huge flood rolling down the street. It didn't exactly look all that deep, but when I stepped in it, pretty much my whole feet plunged straight into water. Wet socks. Great.

Man, wet socks are the worst. There's only a couple things I hate more than wet socks... one being jr. highers. (kidding.)

Luckily, I have my umbrella. So I save myself from being totally drenched, but with the angle this rain is coming down at, it was darn near impossible to stay dry. I hailed a jeep got in as fast as I could and took my seat... My jeans were soaked. Ugh. Wet socks, wet jeans. This is the ills. (btw, i'm starting to say "the ills" for anything that's not all that cool... downers.)

During the commute to downtown, it was kinda funny to watch people scrambling across the streets using any single item to keep themselves partially dry... purses, books, backpacks, cardboard, plastic bags...

A couple cars got stuck in some heavily flooded areas. Man, it was crazy.

So I finally get to Kaloi's Internet Cafe (or KIC) and wait for everyone else to show up so we can get this double date rolling... Apparently, everyone had trouble getting to downtown because of the rain.

Originally for the date we were supposed to go to this restaurant on this large hill overlooking downtown called "Jack's Ridge", but we decided to forego that because of the rain. Instead we went to Picobello, this awesome itallian restaurant on the 5th floor of the mall right next to KIC. We had some great genuine italian pizza, talked for a little, then roamed the malls. Oh and I treated everyone to dinner. Seriously though, for 200 pesos a pizza (roughly $4 for a large size), how can I not treat everyone? I plan on eating lunch there tomorrow.

So Aby and I had a good time together. At least on my part I think so... Kaloi and Lea walked around the mall finding stuff to buy for their soon to be home (they're getting married February 5th, 2006 and want me to play the sax at their wedding... yikes), so Aby and I had some coffee, talked a little bit about the dramas of life and how God is awesome... then went to the arcade where she kicked my butt at pretty much all of the games... but I think I let her win... or did I. I dunno. She was good.

After that, we walked across the street to McDonalds or McDo (mick-doh) as it's referred to around here, and had some desert. I got an Oreo Mcflurry and she got just a regular sundae. We talked a lot about the language... I pretty much just got tutored in Tagalog... it was awesome. I'm really starting to learn a lot of the language.

Funny story. While we were chatting, there were these two girls outside... maybe 12 or 13 each and they were trying to get someone's attention who was eating inside... So this one girl, kinda chubby, starts dancing around... or more like flailing around in front of this window. I was trying my darned hardest to keep my attention focused on Aby, but I just had to point it out to her and we started laughing so hard. Great times.

So yeah the date was awesome possum... also, Lea and Kaloi really want the two of us to be close friends... I know they do. Jeez, those guys are so obvious...

Anyway, that was last night... Today I didn't really do much except go to church, have some discipling time with the campus guys, and play DotA... a Warcraft III mod... it's interesting I guess... it's like cocaine here for all the teenage guys though. Thousands of Filipino kids are wasting their life away playing DotA. Hey, I can't blame them though... I pretty much waste my life away on World of Warcraft.

So... I pretty much love the campus ministry here. These guys are so cool. They definitely rock my socks.

Here's a little thing I threw together on Photoshop:

Aby is the girl second from the right. Lea is second from the left. Kaloi is in the middle (on the guy's picture. duh)

The rest of em, I'll introduce another time. Anyway, I have some homework to finish up, so I'll let you guys go. For now. Yeah.

W00t!

I'm so pumped...

...because I have internet at the house now! This means that I can talk on AIM more... I can consistently post blogs, and I can start taking more pictures and get back to that hobby.

Man! I'm excited!

I also learned that I can upload videos taken with my camera phone... I think they're viewable with quicktime... so I'll have to try that out soon too.

Hope everyone is doing well!
