HOBY WLC 2005 - A Glimpse Into the Past

Greetings from Sunny California!

As I write this, I feel miserable. Physically. This week I've been sick with some kind of coughing/phlegm junk. It's quite annoying. I'm tired. My head hurts and my throat aint feeling all that great either.

But aside from all that, I'm great! Really, I am! Today I went to a HOBY Reunion for California Central. We didn't get all that great of a turnout. In fact, it was pretty lousy. There were five of us. And out of the five, no one was an "ambassador" from this past year. It was alright though. We made the most of it and headed off to T.G.I. Friday's for an unofficial non-HOBY lunch. It's funny because I think I can do with not having to go to Friday's again for a while. I went three times while I was at WLC and again today. That's four times in 3 weeks. I think we can consider T.G.I. Friday's the official HOBY Restaurant. After lunch we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways, a little bummed that not a lot of people came out. Oh well, the CLEWs are looking good, though.

After that, I headed over to Hollywood where I met up with my mom, my aunt, and my cousin where we shopped for a little, then had dinner at this awesome restaurant, Morel's French Steakhouse. Great stuff. So now I'm back home, and writing this blog...

Alrighty. WLC 2005. What is it? Well you can find out in full detail at HOBY's Official Website. It's pretty much a leadership seminar that takes place in a notable U.S. city for one week in July. This year it returned to our nation's capital, Washington, D.C.. We stayed at George Washington University. The seminar was outstanding and I know a lot of people, staff and students, got a lot out of it. (If you dont know anything at all about HOBY, you can find out more on their official website.)

So now, it's been exactly a week since I returned home to California from WLC. I have had a lot of thinking to do this week, as I don't have a job and I've been bumming around, so here are my thoughts, thanks, and memories...

+thoughts.
HOBY has really inspired me to bring positive change to lives of people, whether it be on a large scale like a vaccination drive or something small, like tutoring or mentoring a junior high student. Going to WLC on staff has taught me many things that I didn't expect to learn. I went into it with the mindset of solely giving back to the ambassadors what I received when I went through the program. And though, we did just that, I got so much more than just that. I learned some important life lessons that will stick with me forever... Lessons regarding patience, love, responsibility, courage, time management, etc... just some great skills. HOBY has really helped me to grow as an individual. If I had to pick one thing that HOBY really accomplishes is that it shows young people and less younger people that there are others in the world who have the same ideals and enthusiasm to make a difference and a positive impact on society. We're not alone in the universe and seeing others who have the same goals really brings a sense of unity within people. It's hard to describe, but HOBY just gives you those good vibes... lol.

+thanks.
There are tons and tons of people to thank. First off, my hat goes off to Albert Schweitzer for being an idealist and giving a young actor a sense of greater purpose. Then there's Hugh O'Brian, God bless the man. Just turning 80, he deserves a lot of props for bringing HOBY to life and changing countless lives through it. Now for WLC specifically, I gotta thank Big Daddy Tommy Osborne for just some outstanding leadership for the whole seminar and for helping me learn a great lesson. I gotta thank my fellow ASAs for accepting me into the group with open arms, cause pretty much all of y'all already knew each other. We formed an awesome bond that week and I feel like I can call you guys my brothers and sisters. Marcus, Chris, Pat, Matt, Helaina, Emily, and Bryanna you guys absolutely rock my socks. Next thanks goes to everyone at OPS and TA for doing a superb job of being the glue. Gotta thank my B-Section for being incredible. Lisa, you always make me smile and you help me to see things in different lights. You are truly a special person. From being my HOBY mama in '03 to being HOBY Mama for WLC next year, I know you're only gonna keep doing great and greater things. To Katie, Chris, Big Al, and Ara, thanks for the fun times, laughs, letting me have your kids at some point, and for just being great friends to me. I'm gonna have to come out and visit you guys sometime down the road. To group B-1... wow. You guys are absolutely incredible. You took Russ and I in as your own... lol. Whether it was chanting my name through Marvin or jumping in my bed to wake me up on the last day, you guys always made me laugh/smile/cry. I feel like you're my own children. (partly cause Katie and I are getting married. shhh don't tell her that. jp :p ) I miss you guys and can't wait to hear about the great things you guys are gonna do. To the rest of the Section B Ambassadors, thank you for trusting me with your awesome, "pimped-out" HOBY T-Shirts. They sure made my nights... Love ya guys. To the rest of the Daddy Staff, I have never met a group of enthusiastic, fun-loving characters like all of you. Each of you made WLC what it was and it was "tight". Keep in Touch... If I missed anybody, that person has the right to slap me and stuff cause everyone involved with WLC has affected my life in some way and for that, I'm grateful for whatever contribution you made. Keep up the HOBY Spirit!

+memories.

Wow. I'm back.

Hello world,

It's been a looooong time since I've been here. The last several months have been filled with entirely with an unhealthy addiction to Myspace.com and World of Warcraft. It's all good though, cause I'm back.

As many of you probably don't know, I will be spending my first semester of college out of the country. That's right, I'll be "studying abroad" at Ateneo De Davao University in Davao, Philippines. Needless to say, I'm really freakin excited to be going.

A lot of people have been asking me why I've chosen to go there. It's a complicated story, but the gist of it is that though I am there to study, the main purpose of my trip is to connect with my family. For the most part, all of my family still lives in the Philippines; Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Grandmas, etc. Only my immediate family and two of my uncles and their families live in the United States. So my goal is to spend as much quality time as I can with my family over there, especially with my grandmothers.

Both of my grandfathers passed away when I was very young so I never really had the opportunity to speak with them. I've only heard great things about those men. I'm hoping that I will learn a lot about my family history and lineage from my grandmothers. I plan on documenting what they say and what I find in either video form or written. I'm not totally sure yet. I think that this will be incredibly beneficial to me and to my children and their children and their children's children, etc etc... lol.

I will be gone from Mid-October to March of '06. That's about five months. I gotta be honest, my excitement is mixed with some anxiousness and some fear. I can't say that the Philippines is the safest place in the world. One of my dad's brothers was murdered when he was in his late 20's. Plus, the fact that I'm an American just brings more fears to me, womdering if maybe people will become jealous or hate me because of my situation; or maybe even something more extreme like being kidnapped... I don't know. So I'm praying through it and people who are close to me are praying for me. Don't get me wrong. These are just fears that I have... I'm still stoked to be going to the Philippines.

Another question people have been asking me is if I know/can speak Tagalog, the national language. The answer to that is No, I can't. I know, that's funny... How am I going to learn when I can't even speak the language, right? Luckily for me, the classes at the university are taught in English. Another thing I'm excited about is finally being able to learn the language while I'm there.

So anyway, I'm fired up to be going back to "The Homeland". I know a lot of you have asked me to keep you updated on how that goes when I'm there, so this is how I plan on doing that; by starting this blog back up again. When I get there, I'll let you guys in on my daily life, adjusting to the culture, family stories, and some pictures too. Sorry this was so long-winded, but I had a lot to say. :)

Until next time,
Cy

The Random Ramblings of Cyril Boggs Serrano

A lot of people have been asking me what my thoughts are on the election... It's been a week now, so I guess I've collected my thoughts since then.

Just to let you all know, I am neither Republican nor am I a Democrat. And contrary to popular opinion, Republicans do not equal Christians and Democrats do not equal Non-Christians.

Let me explain another thing, Bob Harpole (our evangelist) made a great point this past Sunday. God's intention is not for us to be divided amongst ourselves. All of us have our differences, whether it be race, or age, personal standpoints, political preference, etc.

Believe it or not, there are both Democrats and Republicans at my church. Some of you might be going, "Well Cy, that's weird. I thought only Republicans go to church!" No, my friend. This is not true. God loves liberals too!

This is what I was telling people before the election, and this is what I'll continue to tell people because it's still true; "God will still be God, come 2005. Nothing can change that, whether it be Bush being elected as president or Kerry being elected as president."

Now that Bush is president, a lot of people are happy (about 51% based on electoral college votes) and a lot of people are disappointed (about 49%)... I even heard a guy killed himself at Ground Zero because he was, to say the least, bummed out by the turnout.

If you're a Bush supporter or a Kerry supporter, Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal, know that God is sovereign and that everything that goes down in this world, be it good or bad, happens because He lets it happen or he wants it to happen.

As for my own views politically, I'll share that with you if we talk one on one. That's a lot more enjoyable to me than trying to type out all my thoughts on the internet...

Have a good one,
Cy

Musical Fever: Catch It.

Hey gang... now for something a little more light-hearted...

I'M HOOKED ON MUSICALS! I had a lot of fun doing My Fair Lady in drama last year, but it didn't really spark an interest in me. So this past June, we went to Broadway in New York and watched Phantom of the Opera. I took some pictures inside Phantom of the Opera and Hairspray. Yeah, I know you're not supposed to, but I loved it a lot... just had to.

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

Wow! This was an incredible musical! It was my first and I loved it very much. The story is so rich and emotion driven. Good stuff. Great acting, great singing. Loved it.

HAIRSPRAY: THE MUSICAL

I saw this in San Diego as I mentioned a couple days ago with my mom. It was a lot of fun to watch. There was just a bunch of energy. Also, Bruce Vilanch was so funny. He plays Tracy's mom in the musical. There were a lot of ad libbed parts that he did... From our political system to Martha Stewart... it was so funny. Anyway, had a blast. SEGREGATION SUCKS!

THE PRODUCERS

This is going to be great. I've kinda wanted to see this since it first came out, I think two-three years ago. Anyway, I'm going to be seing this in Orange County on August 22... So yeah, I heard it's really funny and somewhat offensive. Nice. Mel Brooks is the man.

Musical Fever: Inhale it, get infected, cough it up, give it to the one you love.
Cy

War Sucks.

I'm serious. I want this freakin war to end, now! I hate that we're over there killing people and that we're sending our own citizens over there to a hostile place where our own are dying everyday.

I read today that they found the head of Paul Johnson, an American who worked on Apache hellicopters. He was captured and soon after, beheaded. I did some research online and stumbled across a link to a site that had pictures and a video of the beheading. I really didn't want to watch it, but the curious side of me did, so I checked out the pictures, and my eyes welled up with tears. War is so ugly... I hate this. I definitely knew I didn't want to watch the video... but I did. It made me sick. Sick to my stomach (It's very, very graphic) and sick just about fighting and war and all this crap. I don't know how I feel about them putting the video on the internet, but first amendment rights and all... Ugh. It's disgusting.

If you really want to see the pictures and the video, you'll be able to find it... I'm definitely not giving out the link here. Have a strong stomach too... I can take pretty gruesome/gross stuff... but this was hard for me.

Man, I hope this ends soon. Peace and love to all our troops and civilians out there. We're praying for you and want you all to return safely. God, watch over them...

I HATE WAR"

Yet Another Post, Topic: My Hair!

Yeah, it's me again. There's nothing going on today, so I'm making another post. This isn't news to some people, but it is to most... I cut my hair! Yep, I sold out and fell victim to the man. (My Mom). She hates long hair. I had to appease her. I got it cut real short, and put some highlights in. Anyway, here is what my hair looked like, and what it looks like now.

Before
After

Nice eh? And because I'm even more conceited, here are more views of my hair:

There... if you didn't have enought pictures of my hair, there it was. Man, I'm really bored... 8:00 couldn't come any slower.

Audioblogger is cool!

Weird... third post of the day. Anyway, I discovered this new thing called audioblogging! It's been around for awhile and Blogger is offering it for free for its users. All you do is call a number, imput your unique information, then record a message, and they'll post it to your blog. It's pretty sweet. They say it's useful when you're away from a computer, on the road, or just want to hear your voice. It's stored on their site in mp3 format, then when you click on a link, like the one below, it'll download and play the message. It's pretty neat. Anyway, it's cool... If you're on blogger, try it out. Audioblogger.com

New CD: Chronic Future!

Yo! Wassup? Well, went to Best Buy today and my mom bought me a CD! She's the coolest! I'm just kidding. But seriously, she is. Anyway, I bought --well, my mom bought Chronic Future's new EP out called "Lines In My Face". And it rocks! It's different and it's really good stuff.

You can click on the picture below to launch the band's player. There you can watch their new music video for "Time and Time Again" and listen to some other songs on their CD. I like it a lot.

Chronic Future's Official Site

Check it out, you'll see their style is totally different, which is pretty awesome. Chronic Future - Lines In My Face... good listens...

Still enjoying my summer. There's a worship team meeting tonight at 8:00... that's all I'm doing tonight. I might have a movie night afterwards for anyone who wants to come. Hey, you're invited too!

"there's some utterly damaged particles to deal with
and if I stutter I'm sorry but it's hard to feel swift
when stuck in my stomach is a cannon ball anchor to lift
I've been pushing it down pretending it doesn't exist
well this is what happens when you're pissed about being pissed
you dig yourself so deep you resist just to resist
and there's no way to get back experiences you missed
so start right now today and risk furiousness for bliss.

time and time again we fall into the depths of who we are
but you can't keep running away from what your trying to find."

Trading Spaces

Hey, I'm making a lot of posts to make up for how long I've been gone. Well, I'm addicted to these shows... I know, I know, I'm a nerd. But I really like watching them change people's rooms into either a disaster or something pretty cool. A lot of them really turn out bad, though... here's an example:

Oh Dangit! It's all white!... I didn't see this episode, so I don't know if they liked it, but that thing is hideous! Anyway, just wanted to share that with you guys... I'm off to youth group...

L8r!
Cy

Ocean's 12!

I just wanted to share that I'm really excited about this movie coming out. I loved the first one, so I'm looking forward to this one too. December 10! Wooo!

Actually, I'm just testing out this new picture posting site that I joined so that I could post photos to my blog from my mac. I guess it works, don't know if I like it that much though.
Take care of yourself.

I'm Back: It's been awhile

Hey gang,

Man it's been a long time since i've updated this thing. Almost more than a month. I actually tried to post something on the 4th of July, but something went wrong or something.

Anyway, how are you? Thanks for dropping by. Not many people read this anyway, so think of yourself as pretty darn special.

So I went to San Diego this past weekend with the folks, it was pretty awesome. I slept all the way there and all the way back, so no long drive for me. But anyway, We were down there because it was my uncle's 50th birthday. His family threw him a huge bash, about a hundred or so people were there. There was a caterer and everything, some awesome food, some awesome music, awesome stuff. It's crazy though, because most of my cousins are older than me, so a lot of them were drinking. A lot. It was actually quite funny to watch.

That got me thinking. 50 years old... that's only 33 years away for me. I'm basically a third of the way there. 50! That's crazy...

On Sunday we went downtown where we stayed at a pretty nice hotel right in the heart of downtown. Sunday night, my mom and I saw Hairspray the musical. We weren't really planning on it. It was just an idea. We didn't have tickets or anything, we actually went 20 minutes before the show started to see if they had leftover tickets. $32 for cheap seats up in the balcony. We ran into a lady who was with her church group and two people in her group couldn't make it, so she sold the tickets to us. $100 for two tickets, Row K of the Orchestra section. These were $68 seats, so we got a great deal! My mom had a lot of fun. It was the first time she saw a musical. I had seen Phantom of the Opera this past June on Broadway in N.Y., and since then, I've been hooked on musicals. I'm going to see The Producers in Orange County on August 22.

Well, that's all the time I have for right now... Gotta go do stuff...

Love, Peace, and Chicken Grease,
